HP Palms off WebOS to LG for use in Smart TVs

Written by

In what seems to be an endless journey of rediscovery, LG are yet again replanning their Smart TV offering. HP have sold WebOS to LG, including it’s source code, websites, documentation, engineers and pets. In a typically excited manager, LG have rather swiftly informed the press that they will be using WebOS in their next generation of TVs.

WebOS was, at launch, a seriously impressive bit of software design and programming, bolted onto a hardware range that had some fans, but not quite so many buyers.

However, 2009 is a long time ago in software years, and I’d ask if despite the best efforts of HP in engaging community and maintaining the codebase whether it will still be relevant, particularly in the tricky world of embedded TV chips.
