The triangulation of the Amazon

Written by

People’s tendency to deviate off-piste during dropdown interaction has been observed as long as dropdown menus have been frustrating the very same people.

Amazon made mouse users quiver recently with a new mega dropdown, and Ben Kamens has written a tidy analysis of how it uses Steering Law to its best advantages to remain responsive but calming on the nerves.

We looked at exactly these problems when working on the Arsenal.com redesign, producing 3 different menu prototypes before we came up with a reliable, user-loving solution. There’s always room for improvement, and detecting mouse movement is certainly the place to start.
